Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an athletic sport that makes demands upon the human body. Thankfully today there are plenty of nutritional and dietary supplements that can help you get to, and through, your workouts. Of course read the labels of each product and use them all at your own risk disclaimer type stuff.
Number 1 is going to be Protein. During a strenuous workout your muscles become stretched and torn. Eating plenty of protein will ensure that your muscles are repaired and new muscle tissue is formed. Protein is broken down into Amino Acids in the liver. These amino acids can also be supplemented buy purchasing BCAAs or Branched Chain Amino Acids. These aminos will help repair muscles and build new muscle fibers.
To build muscle it is good to eat your body weight in grams of protein per day. So a 200lb man should be looking to eat 200 grams of protein throughout the day.
Everyday I like to take 1000mg of vitamin C. It is a powerful antioxidant that works wonders in staving off sickness, especially because our sport requires close contact and exchange of sweat.
I like a nice pre-workout drink to get me going for a long advanced class. Usually you will get a pre-workout that has some caffeine, B-vitamins, creatine (for explosive power), BCAAs, citrulline, etc. Pre-workout drinks are designed for energy and added endurance to long workouts. They also help with focus.
During the workout and class I like to drink water infused with electrolytes. Avoid Gatorade as it contains harmful chemicals and color additives.
Post workout I like to take some glutamine. It helps with joint repair. Many people are getting turned onto to CBD. It is a non-psychoactive cannabis product that is great for reducing inflammation and pain.
So in short here is your shopping list:
Protein (whey isolate, or a vegan kind if that’s your thing)
BCAA’s – Branched Chain Amino Acids
