WARNING: Graphic Video – Viewer Discretion Advised
On April 24, 2018, BJJ black belt and accomplished competitor, Tiago Guma, was fatally shot in road rage altercation in Brazil. Although the incident and the footage is very disturbing, Ryron and Rener use this opportunity to discuss the critical role that martial arts instructors have in teaching their students not just when to use their physical skills, but more importantly, when not to use them. Analyzing and learning from tragic events like this are the only chances we have to prevent them from ever happening again.
Brothers and part of jiu jitsu’s most illustrious family, my guests today are Ryron and Rener Gracie who discuss how Brazilian jiu-jitsu has shaped the people they are today; the pressure of continuing their family’s legacy; how UFC (their father’s creation) has become one of the fastest growing sports in history; and the importance of being able to defend ourselves.
From the rough streets of Rio de Janeiro to the spotlights of the UFC, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu has proven to be the most effective self-defense system of all time. In this special introductory video, produced in collaboration with Art of Manliness, Rener Gracie breaks down the exact science behind the techniques of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu that have made the art effective against giants for three generations!
